On our two sites we have a total of 12 fishing lakes and over a dozen wildlife ponds. The four fishing lakes that are in and around the Mallory Park race circuit are complemented by a further eight lakes at the Glebe, which is our 36 acre showcase site located just a couple of miles up the road from Mallory Park. The Glebe is a haven for wildlife and its fishing has been described as the best in England.Seven of the lakes at the Glebe hold a gold accreditation from the Fisheries Accreditation Scheme. This accreditation recognizes the high standards that we maintain, both in the quality of our fish and in all aspects of their environment.

We are a members only club, with no day tickets, and we provide a secure and peaceful environment for you to see which of our many species of fish you can catch. Most of the lakes at the Glebe are single bank fishing and, whether you prefer big fish or lots of fish, we have waters that will keep you smiling all day.

Our season runs from 1st June until 31st March and throughout that time we hold a number of very popular weekly matches. We also host a range of annual national events, such as the ACA Masters, the Schools National, and Fishathon, all of which allow you to rub shoulders with some of the country’s angling legends.

Hillbillyfloats Newsletter September 2008. http://www.now4tackle.com/?p=84 http://www.now4tackle.com/?p=84#comments Thu, 29 May 2008 14:29:59 +0000 Zinky http://www.now4tackle.com/?p=84 Well it seems that all my hard work of the last couple of months has paid off as I managed to buy some time this month to introduce the “Shady Shallow” range of floats as promised in last months Newsletter. I can only say that the response has been phenomenal as I am now starting to make a third large batch of these floats. The first person to receive a set of these was Adrian (Slim Shady) Williams because it was Slim who I named the float after due to his love of fishing up in the water. He phoned me on his way back from Rolfs Lake to tell me that he was “well happy” with the performance of his new floats after the rather extreme test which the Rolfs inhabitants had put them through.

A decent photograph and description of this new addition to the Hillbilly floats range will soon appear on my website courtesy of Chris Royle. I also managed to make the very first “Pikey” margin paste float and send it for Dave “Pikey” Pearson’s approval and after a couple of tweaks and Dave’s reappraisal I am hoping to launch these later this month or early next month. Best sellers this month have been the Shady Shallows but Critters and Shindigs have also been in high demand followed closely by the ever popular Rednecks and Grizzlys. Stocks of these floats have been depleted and I will have to replenish them to keep up with demand before starting on the first runs of the X range which will be followed before winter sets in with the “F1 specials”. However don’t let the name “F1 special” make you think that catching F1’s will be the sole use for this float as it will be suitable also for catching silver fish in many situations. I have also been asked if I have any plans to introduce any canal floats. Some anglers have been using their Diddly Squatts to good effect on the “cuts” and I believe they are also going to appear shortly in a canal fishing feature in Match Fishing magazine. The answer to the question is that being a “canal man” for fourty years I would love to produce a small dedicated range but because there is only one Hillbilly I cannot realistically see this happening until some time next year. Turn around time for an order is now a reasonable two to four weeks (depending on stock) and I hope to keep it that way.
Please note that a couple of changes to the following models are to be introduced on all orders placed AFTER 30/9/08.
All Critters will now be supplied with spring eyes as standard by popular demand with side eye floats still available to special order.
Dweezels will no longer be available with the 2.5mm sight tip and this will be replaced by a choice of 1.5 or 2.5 diameter high visibility tips of proportionate length to the float size and these will be fitted with spring eyes to suit (side eye floats still available to special order). This change is being implemented to make the Dweezel a more versatile and slightly stronger pattern than the current model as a result of field testing.
Text and photographs of the changes will be depicted on the website ASAP.
Well on to the fishing and a report on a typical month of ups and downs for yours truly ………
Hillbillys angling month…..
Cudmore Open Sunday 7th Sept (80+fished).
Not much to write about here as a draw at peg 90 on pool 3 only saw three carp and five skimmers in the net after six hours fishing which was no disgrace as Grant Albutt opposite had even less. Fact is that I was so bored with the lack of action that my late nights in the garage began to catch up on me and I found myself struggling to stay awake and almost fell off my box a couple of times. The match was dominated by pool 5 with two of the end pegs providing first and second places for Garry Skerritt and Neil Machin who both recorded weights in excess of 80lb’s.

Blake Hall midweeker Thursday 16th September (28 fished).

Having surveyed the weather forecast on Metcheck it seemed that Thursday would be the nicest day for some weeks and I decided to get up early and attend the Blake Hall midweek match after putting several trays of floats through the dipper. It was good to see some old friends again as although the fishery is only ten minutes drive from my door it has been rare for me to go there because of my Cudmore schedule. I drew 27 in the shallow area of the Peninsular Lake and was not over confident because pegs in the fourties and fifties usually dominate the venue.  Having surveyed my swim I decided on a two pronged attack of a small method feeder cast towards the Peninsular and a meat line at 14.5 metres which is the maximum length of pole allowed at the venue. The method rig was to be fished with groundbait and hair rigged six or eight mm pellets and the meat rig consisted of a 0.3 Billy Bob to 0.15 line straight through to a 16’s B911 and black Hydro. I decided that as the surface of the lake was flat calm and I only had three feet six inches of water that I would set my pole at the full 14.5 metres allowed by using the standard no4 section and the half extension to compensate for the removal of the poles no1 section. I started on the method whilst drip feeding the pole line via a kinder type pot and spare topkit. After ten minutes I had my first and only fish on the method and after a further two casts with no sign of bites or liners I decided to try the pole line. This proved to be a good decision because by the end of the match a further 14 carp and a lone skimmer had found their way into my net. Whilst sport was hardly hectic it was interesting to find that the best way of catching was to feed some cubed meat then wait for a bite rather than feed all the time. Each time I felt the swim was empty of fish I would lay down a small bed of meat and repeat the process. The scales revealed that my 64lb 12oz net was enough for a welcome win and 70 beer tokens because the usual “flyers” had failed to produce. This meant that not only did I enjoy probably the best days weather of the year but also went home with some coin.

Boddinton Saturday 20th September (60 fished).

The Saturday found me heading south to compete in a sponsored corporate match at the popular British Waterways Boddington Reservoir. After hearty full English breakfast courtesy of the sponsors I drew peg 44 and decided that because the reservoir was flat calm I would only fish two lines. One of these was to be with a straight lead and hair rigged pellet over sprayed 8mm pellet and the other a method feeder clipped up to the horizon loaded with soaked micro’s and baited with a 10mm white chocolate boilie. Before the all in I decided to cast the bomb rig in with no bait on to check the depth and was surprised to see the tip drop back as the weight hit the lake bed and then proceed to fly round as a fish took the pellet band and hooked itself squarely in the lips. As you may imagine I awaited the all in confident that I would catch a decent net of fish. When the “all in” was finally called the angler on 43 cast his bagging waggler and had got a fish on within five seconds but this was to prove his only bite of the day because it seemed that as soon as we started the fish moved away. I started on the bomb rod with no result and after half an hour changed to the long range method which was equally non productive. After just over an hour I decided to “phone a friend” and my buddy from Bedford Phil Stone assured me that I was right to stay on the method at range and simply hope it went around. Well at exactly twelve o’clock it did and I VERY carefully played a four pound mirror to the net and hoped that this was a sign of better sport to come. My hopes were however short lived as this area of the vast reservoir continued to fish very poorly and my next bite came at two pm. This was from a larger fish again taken on a 10mm white chocolate boilie and again wound gingerly in from 80 yards to the net. This was to be my last action of the day other than to consume a nice free pie chips and veg washed down with a welcome cold lager shandy at the George in Kilsby whilst awaiting the results. It transpired that the pegs in the higher numbers had produced a few decent weights of 92, 60 and 40lb’s for the top three and that my two carp for 12lb 6oz was top weight from peg 16 to 58 and worth 11th place plus a cheque for £100 which made me feel somewhat compensated for the lack of sport.

Blake Hall midweeker Thursday 25th September (31 fished)…..
A draw at peg 54 saw me in the deeper water pegs and I set up a 0.5 Dweezel rig with a “blacked out” tip having decided to fish meat on the deck at 14.5 metres as an opening gambit. I also assembled the “obligatory” method feeder rod but hoped that I did not have to spend much of the match on it because with winter just around the corner enough time will be spent watching the end of a rod in the months to come. The pole line was very slow early in the match and produced just a solitary skimmer and a small carp and after a couple of hours things were looking grim as no one in my area was catching. I decided to throw out the method and think about what to do next. I had noticed a couple of anglers catching well on pellet waggler about ten pegs to my left and decided to give it a try myself. When I reeled in the method rod I was surprised to find that a 4lb carp had managed to attach itself without moving the tip and he joined his mate in my carp net. The pellet wagg was unproductive but a bad side wind was not helping my presentation so I decided to “bin it” and return to the pole but this time at seven metres. The same rig sufficed because it was only four inches shallower here than on the long line but I now had the advantage of being able to feed by hand. I felt confident that constant feeding of around twenty cubes of meat a minute would eventually attract the attention of the carp and after around fifteen minutes I had my first bite. This was from a two pound plus barbel that was quickly followed into the net by a small mirror. Constant feeding gradually brought the swim to life and my last three put ins of the match resulted in two decent carp and a three pound plus barbel that must have weighed twelve pounds collectively. The scales revealed that my 35lb 4oz was enough for fourth place and a section win just one fish short of the 36lb which took third place. The winner had 51lb with the second placed angler taking 46lb and I was left thinking of what might have been if the bigger fish had started to feed an hour earlier.
Clattercote Saturday 27th September (60 fished)…….
The power of the Internet is a wonderful thing and although this was my first ever visit to this “bagging” water information from various sources made me feel confident that I would have the bait and tactics needed to be competitive in this match. After a hearty full English at the George in Kilsby I set off to find peg 34 at Clattercote full of anticipation having had reports that the reservoir had been fishing quite well. Rarely for me I had four “ready made” rods in my bag to cope with all the methods I had elected to try. Ground bait was also done and this gave me lots of time to get ready for the “all in”. I started on the method feeder cast towards the middle because there was no sign of any surface activity which I put down to the cold misty start to the day. Well two hours into the match I was still surveying a motionless tip and the only action I had seen was the odd skimmer and tench being caught on slightly more subtle tactics than my 10mm white chocolate boily.  I had decided that although there are good stocks of these fish at Clattercote it was going to be “carp or bust” for me having driven 100 plus miles to the venue. The area of the lake that I had drawn had water behind the wooden walkway and as soon as the sun broke through a group of large carp could be plainly seen swimming around in this shallow water. I had been feeding pellets tight to the walkway right from the all in and every now and again I had a drop in with my carp rod in the hope of taking one of these mid double figure fish. However although they were happy to accept any food I threw behind the walkway they would not come out to play on my side of it. A half hour spell on the bagging waggler failed to produce a take as did a similar spell casting a large candle float 60 yards baited with a floating chum mixer. I continued to lash in the 6mm pellets on the edge of the boards and decided to try a bit of punched meat on my method rod reasoning that I could always eat the rest of the tin if the fish did not want it. I had just about given up all hope when the tip flew round as a 6lb mirror  realised it had made the mistake of accepting the meat and bolted for freedom. Well at least I had avoided the dreaded dry net but another hour of fishing the method failed to produce any more takes. With only half an hour left to the all out I decided to amuse myself by feeding my “pet” fish behind me and cast out the method with the reel in free spool mode. When I turned around I noticed that the “pet” fish could no longer be seen and assumed that they had at last decided to consume the five pints of 6mm pellets I had fed at the edge of the boards. I quickly “binned” the method rod and having baited the size 6 Fox series 2XS hook on the carp rod which was attached to 30lb big game line straight through to the reel I lowered the rig into the swim by the boards. A couple of “wobbles” on the float told me that there were large fish in the swim and with 20 minutes to go the float submerged and my strike was met with the solid resistance of a very large fish. I proceeded to try and drag the fish from under the boards but the hook came out and snagged in the underside of the boards. I managed to free it and having re baited dropped back in again and re fed the swim. A couple of minutes later a wobble of the float betrayed the presence of fish but a couple of anglers who had packed up early then walked past my swim on the way back to the car park and killed it for the remaining five minutes. The lost fish was to prove costly as it only required 8lb 10oz to claim a cheque for £100 and 12th place. With only 42lb winning the match and 27lb being enough for third it was a hard day for all with lots of dry nets and I can only assume that the hot still conditions were to blame. However a nice Beef and Yorkshire washed down with a cool shandy back at the George went some way to compensate for the lack of sport and I stayed on for the presentation to give the prize winners a well deserved round of applause.

User reports and catches…..Ben Williams contacted me to say that he had tried his new Rednecks in a match and although he was drawn in a poor area he thought the floats were very stable and sensitive.

Irish Angling Festivals 2009 http://www.now4tackle.com/?p=89 http://www.now4tackle.com/?p=89#comments Wed, 28 May 2008 18:14:50 +0000 Zinky http://www.now4tackle.com/?p=89 Anglers World Holidays is launching two completely new Irish festivals in 2009 but says that the 2009 Monaghan Pairs Festival will still be the number one.

“It is certainly the ‘hot ticket’ on the Irish match scene”, said Anglers World boss Martin Founds.  “The five-day competition takes place on Lough Muckno during September and has consistently produced the best match catches going back for more than 20 years.

“This year the bream didn’t appear, yet the average catch was 36 lb per-man, per-day, of roach between six and eight ounces!”The first of two brand new sponsored festivals takes place on the River Shannon at Portumna in April and is sponsored by the Shannon Oaks Hotel & Country Club.

The four day event is timed to coincide with the mass movement of roach and hybrids from Lough Derg into the river when big catches are most likely. The other is at Ballinamore – a famous Irish angling holiday centre – where €1,500 and the return of all entry fees is the lure to some of County Leitrim’s very best waters. Plans are already in hand to create facilities on five totally different proven waters holding bream, roach, hybrids and tench.

Portumna International Angling Festival April 20-23 Lower River Shannon €1000 sponsorship and return of all entry fees

Banagher Festival April 27- 1 May Lower River Shannon. £500 sponsorship and return of all entry fees

Ballinamore Spring Festival  June 1-5 Fishing on lakes around County Leitrim. €1500 sponsorship and return of all entry fees

Stena Challenge  June 8-12. Fishing on lakes around Gowna and Carrigallen £2,000 sponsorship and return of all entry fees

Monaghan Pairs September 21-25. Fishing on the Lough Muckno. £250 sponsorship and return of all entry fees
